Teaching

Steven is a passionate teacher specialising in composition and the techniques of new music, sonic art, music history, and theory. He is currently Professor of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music and Supervisory Tutor at the University of Cambridge, having previously taught at Brunel University, City University London, and the Royal College of Music, as well as a number of private students.

Students have gone on to fruitful careers across the music profession, in composition, arts admin, and music therapy. Composers' successes include performances with Britten Sinfonia, Manchester Collective, the Hallé, Manchester Camerata, Sofia Symphony Orchestra, and Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, featured at festivals including the BBC Proms and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

He is open to enquiries from interested students, and especially from prospective doctoral researchers.
